May of 2006

Whoa, time has flown by. It seems like yesterday we decided to take on this trip. I'm writing this as we travel down the highway, so I do not have any pictures. So you will have to use your imaginations.

Within this last month there seemed to be many items to buy and many plans to finalize, the most expensive of which were four new tires for our bikes.

The Dunlop D606 is a DOT approved tire that is very much off-road inspired, as well as being very durable. Therefore they are capable of highway use, but also are just as good in non-pavement conditions. I believe(hope) these tires will last us through the trip. I don't much relish the idea of being left to choose from the stock of a dealership. Their choices are usually few and far between. So we can hope they will last the duration.

The next item on our purchase list was a luggage carrier for the rear fender of my bike. A luggage carrier is a metal rack that allows you to carry items above the rear fender. The amount of items are fairly limited(no more than 10-15 pounds), but the more you don't have to carry on in a backpack or in the saddlebags, the better. I purchased an aluminum rack from Baja Designs. It carries luggage very well.

The luggage I'm carrying on the rack is our computer and my backpack. After our failed Spring Break trip, I realized the carrying a backpack with a computer wasn't comfortable at all. I decided to find another way to carry it. Pelican Cases makes an small laptop case that's waterproof and is very shock-proof because it's lined with foam. This case rides atop our bed padding on the luggage rack with my CamelBak drink system. With the limited ride time, all of this seems to ride very good. We'll see.

The time has come for us to leave. We are hoping to make daily updates if possible.

See you down the trail.
